Montana
Verified from statute
3-class system
- No 3-class system (a 2025 bill to add one, SB 387, did not pass). An "electrically assisted bicycle" has two tandem wheels and a motor that cannot push a 170-lb rider above 20 mph on level pavement; it counts as a bicycle under traffic law. [MCA 61-8-102(2),(7)]
Age limits
- Montana bicycle law (61-8 Part 6) sets no minimum age. [MCA 61-8 Part 6]
Helmets
- Montana bicycle law (61-8 Part 6) contains no helmet requirement. [MCA 61-8 Part 6]
Where you can ride
- Same as bicycles: roadways and paved shoulders. Sidewalk riding is allowed unless signs prohibit it; yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal before passing. [MCA 61-8-605 and 61-8-608]
License / registration / insurance
- Bicycles are excluded from the definition of motor vehicle, so no driver license or registration applies. [MCA 61-1-101 ("motor vehicle")]
Speed & equipment
- At dawn, dusk or night: front lamp and rear reflector/lamp required. [MCA 61-8-607]
